SEIC tariff adjustment for 2024
The electricity bill for an annual consumption of 2,500 kWh (corresponding to a 4-room apartment) in Gland will rise from CHF 707.92 to CHF 821.09 in 2024, an increase of CHF 9.43 per month (excluding VAT). While energy prices will remain relatively stable, it is the increase in transmission costs and federal taxes with the introduction of the "electricity reserve", a tax to finance security of supply in winter, that will account for the lion's share of the rise. In addition, the increase in the VAT rate will come into effect on January 1, 2024.
A persistent energy crisis
Despite the easing of energy prices on international markets since the start of the year, they remain high. The European energy crisis is not yet over, and short- and medium-term trends are uncertain. As a result, despite SEIC's diversified purchasing policy, the average energy price remains high. SEIC customers will therefore pay on average 0.3 ct more per kWh than in 2023. Despite this, SEIC's tariffs remain lower than those of other networks in French-speaking Switzerland.
Delivery charges
Transmission charges, also known as stamps, will rise by an average of 24% in 2024, or 2.71 cts per kWh. This increase is due partly to higher tariffs for the national and supra-regional grids managed by Swissgrid - the national grid operator and owner - and partly to the investments needed to strengthen and prepare regional grids to meet the strong growth in demand for electricity, and to integrate an ever-increasing amount of decentralized photovoltaic production. In addition, Swissgrid is increasing the tariff for system services (the energy used to balance the grid) from 0.46 ct per kWh to 0.75 ct per kWh in 2024.
Taxes and fees
On January 1, 2024, the Swiss Confederation will introduce a new "electricity reserve" tax of 1.20 cts per kWh to finance all measures taken to guarantee security of supply. These include hydropower reserves, reserve power plants and emergency generators. Also noteworthy is the increase in VAT to 8.1%, as voted by the people in 2022.
In general
Taking these factors into account, by 2024, the total annual electricity bill for a household living in a 4-room apartment consuming 2,500 kWh per year will rise to :
- in Gland from CHF 707.92 in 2023 to CHF 821.09, an increase of around 16%.
- in Prangins from CHF 667.92 in 2023 to CHF 781.09, an increase of around 17%.
